Well, it looks like Google has updated their PageRank and we went from a 5 to a 3. It doesn’t hurt my feelings too much, but I have heard this latest update was to hurt websites that sell links – something what this website does not do. So as long as it isn’t because of that, I am OK with the update. As long as Google thinks this site is important in the search results, thats all that is important. The PR update didn’t seem to damage our search results for terms our website represents. So because of that, we feel a lot better.
What kind of PageRank updates have you seen? Any dramatic drops for any of your sites?

After picking up a book by Chris Anderson about the long tail of marketing, I’d like to encourage all the affiliates out there or aspiring affiliates to learn from the basic principals in the book. If you attack niches online through affiliate programs (by picking a particular niche and dominating it), you’ll have success. If the success is small, it’s still success – so you should build on that and create another site around another niche. Aiming for a particular niche will bring you more profitable results because you can dominate that niche and grow as it grows.
We’ve done the same with our affiliate programs in our network – tried to bring in every possible niche offer that converts, and concentrate that into one network. This will give you more to choose from and profit on. Whatever niche you choose to create a site on, be sure to follow through with the completion of your site and relevant content.

I had the pleasure of attending the free show called PodCampPittsburgh today and I found it to be a very informative. I caught a session of web analytics and monetizing blogs. The free swag was pretty good too. I have to give it to Pittsburgh on this one – they are becoming a technology hub of the east coast.
I’d definitely return if there is a Podcamp Pittsburgh 3.

I stumbled upon an article by Raj Dash of Performancing.com. The article is called PR10 Sites – They Do Exist. Now I know everyone is obsessed with their Google PR and it is useful in determining a few ranking factors for SEO- but what caught my eye about the article was down at the bottom he mentioned: “Generally speaking, don’t get too obsessed about the PR of your sites except for ad networks that use it to measure what you’ll get paid for ads.”
WHAT?!
I actually respect the quality of articles on that site, but that’s just wrong. No Ad Network, including Firelead – EVER bases payouts on Google PR. Thats just silly. And if you are working with an affiliate marketing network like that – they are really in the dark.
Payouts are given based on performance. Nothing more, nothing less.

Skype is a great tool that I use regularly to communicate to affiliates and friends. But after recently installing Vista and racking my brain, I’ve concluded that it just isn’t ready for Vista. There have been a few reports of it working on their site, but most are still running into the issue that I did: the other party cannot hear you but you can hear them. I also downloaded yahoo messenger as a temporary fix but found that Skype actually prohibited that from working unless you uninstall it. So for now I am going to wait some more time for Skype to get on the ball…it’s been a long time guys! Lets get this working with no bugs.

I am pleased to announce the first winner of the first Firelead.com contest: Aden Mott! Aden writes a blog here: www.adensblog.com
The contest was entirely impartial and I gave a listing of qualifying winners to “The Lazy Hippy” from WickedFire.com
He placed all the qualifying affiliate codes into a hat and drew out of that to make it fair.  See his video here: The Lazy Hippy – Ethical Internet Marketing.
